Luanda - The holding of one of the stages of the Davis Cup (Group IV) in Angola from June 19 to 23, is a proud moment for all Angolans, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão said Wednesday.
Speaking to the press at the opening of the event, which is taking place on the fields of the Kikuxi Villas Club Academy in Viana, the minister said it is also a stimulus for young Angolan athletes.
"It's a world reference cup and bringing it to Angola is a proud moment for all of us," the minister said, adding that the mission is to raise the country's profile by holding major international events.
The Davis Cup is the World Tennis Championship for men's national teams, on the calendar of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
On Wednesday , in the first round, Angola's Felix André lost two sets to none to Algeria's Youssef Riane, 6-3; 6-4.
The Angolan team is made up of tennis players Chris Lukano, André Fernando André, Daniel Domingos, Emerson Pedro, Felix André and team captain Nelson Almeida.
Angola’s last participation in the event was in 2001, in Brazzaville, Congo. WR/MC/AMP
