Luanda – The International Chess Master, Manuel Mateus, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, in Luanda, victim of illness, ANGOP learned from a federative source.
Manuel Mateus was the first Angolan to acquire the title of International Master, after victory, in Luanda, in the African Zonal Championship, in 1987.
At the time, aged 20, he achieved the International Master standard, ratified by the International Federation of the sport.
The former chess player began taking his first steps in the sport in primary school, in 1978, in the province of Malanje, as part of the sports movement underway in all provinces of the country.
He was the only athlete to win three consecutive absolute national champion titles (1987, 1988 and 1989).
Before that, he became national junior champion in 1986.
