Luanda - The Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, said Wednesday in Luanda that the Sports Ministry is studying a plan to support former sportsmen and women that represented Angola national teams.
Speaking to the press during the funeral of the former basketball player Ângelo Victoriano, the minister explained that he would be meeting with associates in the next few days to find the best model.
The 56-year-old player died Saturday of diabetes at the Military Hospital in Luanda.
According to the minister, rules are needed to be put in place to formally support those high-performance athletes who gave their all for the country.
The vice-president of the ruling MPLA, Luísa Damião, on her turn, said the aim is to pay tribute to the son of Angola, a legendary sportsman who made the country very proud.
The politician said Ângelo Victoriano leaves a great legacy and pride in having made his contribution to national sport, as well as being a man of good qualities.
In his history, for 1º de Agosto won three African club trophies, while for the senior national team he won eight African titles (1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2005).
He made his World Championship debut in Argentina in 1990, followed by appearances in Canada (1994) and the United States (1998).
Ângelo Victoriano also competed in the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, in 1992, Atlanta, USA (1996), Sydney, Australia (2000) and Greece, Athens (2004).
In 2009, Ângelo was assistant coach at 1.º de Agosto, where he was national champion.
