Luanda – Angola’s Petro de Luanda football team and Democratic Republic of Congo TP Mazembe are due to face for the fifth time on April 29 in Lubumbashi for the first leg of the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The second leg, according to the draw, is scheduled for April 5 at Luanda’s 11 de Novembro stadium. The two teams face 15 years after their last encounter, with two wins for both sides.
The first match between the two teams took place in1988, with the Angolans coming out on top (2-1) in Luanda, and repeating the feat in the second leg, 1-0, at their opponents' ground.
The Congolese team won the last two matches, 3-0 in Lubumbashi and 2-1 in Luanda in 2009.
If they progress to the next round, Petro de Luanda or TP Mazembe will face the winner of the tie between Al Ahly (Egypt) and Simba Sport Club (Tanzania).
Also through to the quarter-finals are Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, ASEC Mimosa from Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), Esperance of Tunis and Young Africans from Tanzania.
Petro de Luanda reached the semi-finals of Africa's biggest club football competition on two occasions, in 2001 and 2022 respectively.
TP Mazembe have five titles as champions of the continent, won in 1967, 1968, 2009, 2010 and 2015.
In this edition, Petro de Luanda finished unbeaten in group C with 12 points, while TP Mazembe came second with 10 points in group A.
