Luanda - Angola swimmer Henrique Mascarenhas failed Tuesday to qualify for the semi-finals of the 100-meter freestyle, in his debut at the Olympic Games in Paris (France).

Mascarenhas, 22-year old, finished 7th out of eight competitors in a race held at the Arena La Defénse Pavilion, with a time of 52.52.

Saudi Arabian Zaid Al Sarraj finished first with a time of 51.21, followed by Adell Sabovic with 51.77. Alexander Shah was third with a time of 51.91.

Other competitors: Musa Zhalayev, 4th (with a time of 52.29), Grisi Koxhaku, 5th (52.32), Mohamad Zubaid 6th (52.35) and Johann Stickland 8th (52.94). 

Mascarenhas, who is training in England, was chosen for the Olympic Game after he dominated the Angola national ranking with 741 points, beating the then leader Salvador Gordo (731).

Lia Lima, the women's representative, will compete in the 200-meter butterfly later Tuesday.

Along with swimming, Angola is taking part in the Olympic competition with rowing, canoeing, sailing, judo, athletics and women's handball.
