Luanda - Angola remains among the 12 African countries to have four representatives in competitions held by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the governing body of the sport on the continent has said.
Despite the poor performance of the three representatives (1º de Agosto, Sagrada Esperança and Académica do Lobito) in the 2023/24 season, Angola remains in the "Top 12" of the competitions that qualify two "ambassadors" for the Champions League and the same number for the Confederation Cup.
Angola's fourth representative in African competitions, Petro de Luanda, reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League, being knocked out last Saturday by the DR Congo TP Mazembe, after a goalless draw in the first leg in Lubumbashi and a 1-2 defeat in the Angolan capital.
CAF's criteria are the frequency and performance of each club in the Champions League and Confederation Cup every five years, a period in which Angola has remained in both competitions.
1.º de Agosto reached the semi-finals of the League, where they were eliminated by Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia) in 2018, while Petro de Luanda were eliminated by Wydad de Casablanca (Morocco) in 2022.
