Luanda - The Angolan Boxing Federation (FABOXE) has scheduled elections for 2024-25 for December 30, putting an end to a four-year stalemate between two curiously elected chairmen.

In a controversial act, Carlos Luís and Simão Muanda were elected presidents for the 2020-24 period, at different times, with processes riddled with irregularities, leading the sport into four years of almost complete stagnation.

Throughout this period, all attempts to bring the situation into line with the Sports Associations Act failed, even with the involvement of the courts and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

In the meantime, the institution was no longer recognized by its international counterparts (the African Confederation and the International Federation), the latest consequence being that it was prevented from taking part in the African Games held in March in Accra, Ghana.

As a result, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Rui Falcão, recently urged the parties to come to an understanding through the holding of elections or risk of measures under the basic law of the sports system.

So the members got together and held an extraordinary general meeting on October 31, where elections were scheduled for December 30.

The group led by the chairman of the General Assembly, Lucas Chilunda of Carlos Luís’s side elected in 2020, began with information and clarification on the various legal and criminal proceedings.

The members then decided that FABOXE would no longer be affiliated to the International Boxing Association (IBA) because the institution is no longer part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The fighters also decided to join the World Boxing Federation (WB).

The report on the activities of the provincial associations in full possession of their statutory rights, namely Cabinda, Huíla, Uíge, Zaire and Luanda, was also approved.

The Electoral Commission was elected, made up of three members: Agostinho Neto (chairman), Joaquim Gomes (secretary) and Paulo Morais (scrutineer).

This working group started work on November 2, and two days later the electoral process will be opened, with the delivery of the calendar and regulations.

The 18th and 19th are reserved for submitting candidate lists and the 20th for opening and publishing them.

November 21 to December 7 are reserved for complaints and validation of the competing lists, while December 9 is for the official publication of the competing lists.

The electoral campaign will run from December 10 to 28, with reflection on December 29 and the election on December 30.

At the end of the activity, in a gesture of fair play, Carlos Luís and Simão Muanda hugged each other and shook hands, guaranteeing a new era of understanding for national boxing.

They promised to present their respective work proposals to the members and to respect the results of the polls on December 30. BSV/MC/AMP
