Luanda - The São Silvestre race disputed annually on December 31 was postponed to March or April 2022, as part of the fulfillment of the new presidential decree to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the head of the Angolan Athletics Federation (FAA), Bernardo João told ANGOP.
Federated sports activities have been suspended due to the worsening of cases of contamination by Covid-19 in recent days.
The measure announced by the Minister of State and Head of the President's Military House, Francisco Pereira Furtado, is based on a Presidential Decree and is part of the new package of decisions aimed at containing the rapid spread of the virus in communities.
The Presidential Decree also limits individual sports. The new package of exceptional and temporary measures will run until January 15, 2022.
So far 1970 runners are registered for the year-end race São Silvestre of Luanda, among popular, federated and Paralympic athletes, in an edition in which Kenya, Gambia and DRC participate with two athletes each.
