Saurimo – With the aim of supporting the participation of the national men's football team in the African Nations Championship (CAN'2023), thousands of fans living in the Candombe neighbourhood, in the province of Lunda-Sul, will be able to watch the national team's matches on a giant screen, on the initiative of local businessman.
The Angolan national team which is nicknamed “Palancas Negras” is in group D, alongside Algeria, their opening opponents on Monday (Jan 15), Mauritania and Burkina Faso.
Speaking to ANGOP, the sponsor said that because football is a festival that unites all Angolans, he had taken the initiative to give strength to the national team and support those who may have difficulty to watch all the matches.
However, he was confident of a victory for Angola, and to this end he suggested more unity and a commitment to defence, as well as calmness in order to achieve the goals.
For his part, Amado Luanda, a resident of Candembe, said he was pleased with the businessman's initiative, and that the giant screen was an asset, as it would allow more people to follow the performance of the Palancas Negras.
Another resident in Cambambe, Jorge Seheno, said that he expects good results from the competition, adding that the technical team should coordinate well the team´s structure which according to him, should always be assisted by a psychologist, to help ease the players' tensions.
In a tour carried out by ANGOP, in addition to the businessman, various restaurants, bars and some avenues have been set up with televisions so that supporters can watch the CAN matches.
The continental championship started on Saturday 13th and is due to end on 11th February.
It was scheduled for 2023, but due to the rainy season in Ivory Coast, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) moved it to this year.
Angola is taking part for the ninth time in the competition, which made its debut in 1996 in South Africa. Angop/JW/FN/MRA/DOJ
