Luanda - National team swimmer Santiago Guimarães on Wednesday won the silver medal in the 800 metre freestyle, at the opening of the Zone IV African Championship, which runs until the 12th of this month, in Windhoek, Namibia.
The 14 year-old athlete from the Clube Náutico da Ilha de Luanda made this achievement with a time of 10min:00s.98, in a universe of 12 competitors with validated times.
This is the athlete's second participation in this African tournament of the region, after his debut in the 2023 edition, held in Luanda, in which Angola came in second place in the general classification.
In this long-distance event, the country was also represented by Davi Dose, who finished in 11th place, with a time of 11:54.21.
The gold medal went to South African Kellen Jones (9m13.33), the Seychelles swimmer, Madrid fan Jean-Baptiste secured the bronze (10m09.91).
In this event, Angola has a team made up of 27 athletes.
Therefore, Namibia is the current champion.
