Luanda - The Angolan athlete Mayra Lemos won the gold medal at the Cadet and Youth Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The Angolan athlete defeated England’s Valentina Pensavalle in the 62kg category final.

Mayra Lemos, aged 15, made it through to the final after beating Marita Abou Farhat, from Lebanon, and Karina Potapova, from Ukraine.

Angola and South Africa are the only African representatives taking part in the world championships in which 40 countries are competing.

This gold brings to four the number of medals won by Angola at the event, after the three bronze medals won by Albertina Ntyamba, Stélvia Muhanha and Cláudio Fontoura.

The National Team will be back in action on Friday, at the Arena Mubadala pavilion in Abu Dhabi, with athletes Paulo Alfredo and Estefânio Francisco, in the -52.2 kg categories. MC/TED/AMP
