Luanda - Angola national senior football team earned a total of 2.1 million US dollars for qualifying for the round of 16 and quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN '2023) held in Côte d'Ivoire.
Angola received 800,000 US dollars from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for qualifying for the round of 16 and 1.3 million for reaching the quarter-finals.
During the CAN, Angola beat Mauritania (3-2), Burkina Faso (2-0), Namibia (3-0), drew with Algeria (1-1) and lost to Nigeria (0-1), results that put them among the most prolific in the competition, with nine goals scored and four conceded.
The champions Côte d'Ivoire collected prize money of 11.6 million US dollars, while the runners-up in the competition, Nigeria, collected a total prize of USD 8.6 million, with third-placed South Africa yielding 7.1 million.
Prior to this year's competition, the African champions used to receive prize money of 5 million US dollars, the runner-up (2.9 million) and third (2.4 million USD).
According to the CAF, the aim of increasing the prize money is to raise the quality of the sport on the continent, as well as to recognize the effort and dedication of the participating teams.
