Luanda - The youth team of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), in both genders, won 16 medals in the 7th edition of the African Championship, which takes place from May 27 to June 1, in Windhoek (Namibia).
At the event, which takes place at the 'Hybrid Fitness Center' Academy, the Angolans won, on their first day of competition, nine gold, six silver and one bronze medals.
Cláudio Fontoura (57kg), Lucas Mendes (48kg), Paulo Afredo (52.2kg), Marco Amaro (-120kg), Milfa Nicolau (83kg), Joveth Mavimgu (65kg), Joana Bel (62kg), Gisela Luna (48kg), Mayra Lemos (62kg) and Stelvina Muhanha (44kg) won gold.
Alícia Capita (48kg), Yessu Lima (57kg), Generosa Catila (44kg), Leonildo Cangombe (52.2kg) and Gilberto Monteiro (-120kg) took silver, while Júnior Pinto (61kg) took bronze.
The group, composed of 76 athletes, including juveniles, juniors and seniors, in both sexes, aims to revalidate the continental title, won in September 2023, in a competition held at the Kilamba Multipurpose Pavilion, in Luanda.
Angola enters the scene again this Wednesday in men's seniors with Francisco Tchapaina, Adilson Serrão and Nivanio Novais (52.1 kg - strawweight), Mafuana Mbungo, Graciano Brecio and Pedro Pascoal (56.7 kg - flyweight), Afonso Vemba, Melson Prata, Adalberto Ntyamba and Leonardo Pascoal of 61.7 kg (bantamweight).
The African competition features hosts Namibia, Ghana, Egypt, Zambia, South Africa, Cameroon, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In the last edition, Angolans collected a total of 39 medals, including 18 gold, 14 silver and seven bronze. IN/MC/DOJ
