Cameia – Cameia National Park, in the province of Moxico, country’s east, has started recording the return of several species of animals that escaped to the Republic of Zambia, ANGOP learned Tuesday.

The Park administrator, Bonifácio Sometinda, explained that this is the return of some species of giraffes, zebras and lions, who fled due to the strong presence of hunters in the forest perimeter.

The animal and forest reserve is being verified by the secretary of State for the Environment, Yuri Valter Santos.

According to Bonifácio Sometinda, the return of these species is the result of the control and environmental awareness actions that the forestry inspectors have carried out in the communities, with the aim of preventing poaching and anarchic fires in the perimeter.

“With the presence of inspectors, poaching has considerably reduced”, he said.

As part of the program to revitalize park conservation areas, he said that it will soon have the support of 40 inspectors, coming from Cangandala Park, in the province of Malanje, who will join the current 13 to reinforce perimeter surveillance.

Bonifácio Sometinda said that, currently, there are two checkpoints set up in the Cameia camp and another in the Mussuma Mitete corridor, in the Bundas municipality.

In turn, the administrator of the municipality of Cameia, António Willis, defended the installation of a park administration, with the possible conditions, to facilitate inspectors in carrying out their tasks, as well as the improvement of access roads to the perimeter to promote tourism.

The Cameia National Park is located in a total area of 14,450 square kilometers. It was defined as a Hunting Reserve in 1937 and transformed into a park in 1957.

The park is limited to the eastern region by the Zambezi River, to the South by the Luena River and to the West by the Benguela Railway (CFB) line, which crosses it to the North.

A large part of the park is supplied by barriers flooded by large rivers that are part of the Zambezi hydrographic basin, such as the Luena, Lumeji and Chifumage, where among other species there are animals such as lechwe, wild boars, tungo, hyenas and foxes.
