Moçâmedes - The Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, announced today, Wednesday, in Moçâmedes, that the Iona National Park will be repopulated with 14 more giraffes that will join the eight existing giraffes.
'Next week we will release 14 more giraffes, as three giraffes died out of the first 14 that we received in July 2023 for climate reasons,' she said.
The minister, who was speaking to the press at Welwitschia Mirábilis airport after her arrival in Namibe for a three-day working visit, informed that the infrastructure to support tourist activity in the park will be inaugurated next week.
She added that infrastructure will be inaugurated next Wednesday that will be able to accommodate more than 80 people, comprising bedrooms, offices, kitchens, leisure areas and other services.
The infrastructure, built from scratch in Iona Park, will accommodate visitors to that natural reserve, which is why the sector created a community awareness program, with a view to conserving and protecting fauna. VR/FA/PA/DOJ
