Luanda - The oil industry is among the sectors that pollute the ocean the most, followed by fishing and transportation vessels, the national director of Environment, Sandra Nascimento, said Tuesday in Luanda.
Speaking to ANGOP about the pollution of the oceans, Nascimento said contamination results from hydrocarbon spills, waste disposal, urban sewage, disorganized and illegal fishing, among other factors.
The official recalled that ocean pollution has many consequences, as it jeopardizes the survival of marine species such as turtles, fish, seals, birds and blue whales, underlining that the Angolan government is a signatory to several conventions, in which national plans and strategies are drawn up to respond to the environmental problems identified.
Domestically, Nascimento explained, the government has carried out campaigns to collect waste and raise awareness of the problem of single-use plastic bags and to promote their reuse and recycling.
“To mitigate this situation we have promoted various activities, such as Expo Recycling and fairs for recycled products and artifacts. Likewise, a working group has been set up to draw up the Plastic Ban Plan, the latter supported by Presidential Decree 292/22 of December 30,” she said.SJ/MCN/TED/AMP
