Luanda - At least 1,500 trees were planted in the municipality of Icolo e Bengo, Luanda province, during a tree-planting campaign in defence of the environment, which began on Saturday.
Officials, young people from the National Youth Council, politicians, churchgoers and residents came together to plant American and normal acacias.
Icolo e Bengo Administrtarto, Isabel Nicolau dos Santos, led the activities in the urban district of Catete, specifically in Deolinda Rodrigues Park and the Uala neighbourhood.
Speaking to ANGOP, the municipal administrator of Icolo e Bengo, Isabel Nicolau dos Santos said that the action was part of the Luanda government's programme to afforest the province.
The government aims to improve the quality of the environment and consequently the quality of life of citizens, he emphasised.
In the Uala neighbourhood, the activists planted trees for the delimitation and formation of vegetable backyards, with the aim of providing a healthier environment and presenting a better look.
On the other hand, due to the level of vulnerability of the residents of the Uala neighbourhood, the administrator announced a programme to support families, with the participation of local businesspeople.
"We found families here in a critical state of vulnerability, so we're going to make contact and, within our social support programmes, show our solidarity," she said.
She also said that this action will be carried out in all of the municipality's neighbourhoods in stages. AJQ/DAN/DOJ
