Luanda - The Angolan government intends to completely ban the production and use of single-use plastic bags, taking into account the danger they pose to human health and the continuation of marine species.
The information was provided by the national director of the Environment, Sandra Nascimento, as part of the campaign to raise awareness among citizens about the reduction of single-use plastic bags, opened on Wednesday in Luanda.
The initiative of the Ministry of the Environment, nationwide, takes place under the motto 'On this day, say no to the use of plastic bags', within the framework of July 3rd, World Day Without Plastic Bags.
According to Sandra Nascimento, there is still a long way to go to completely end the production and use of these plastic bags.
In this area, she said that a legal diploma on the subject is being prepared and an environmental education program is underway.
This program includes the dissemination of good practices, by raising awareness among the population about the risks of plastic bags, which take about 400 years to degrade.
Sandra Nascimento revealed that they work on a program that promotes the production and use of ecological, biodegradable bags and recycled material.
The opening ceremony of the campaign took place in one of the stores of the Kibabo business group. On the occasion, its head of Communication and Marketing, Bruno de Sousa, stressed that they have been implementing, for about a year, policies to reduce plastic bags in their stores.
She pointed out that it is not an easy exchange, for financial reasons of some customers, taking into account that they must purchase reusable bags.
She explained that they are selling more durable and reusable bags in stores, as an ecological option. SJ/OHA/DOJ
