Malanje- Twenty-five million euros is the amount to be made available to the Angolan government for the protection of biodiversity in four national parks, the European Union (EU) ambassador to Angola, Rosário Bento Pais, announced in Malanje.
The diplomat, who was speaking during a visit to the Cangandala National Park (home to the Giant Sable antelope), said that the process of negotiating the parks to be covered by the project was currently underway.
She also said that it was a pilot project, which would initially benefit only four national parks, including Quissama.
She recognised the hard work that the Angolan government has done to prevent extinction and preserve the Giant Sable antelope, whose species only exists in Malanje.
On the occasion, the administrator of Cangandala Park, Vítor Paka, gave a brief presentation of the sable antelope's valences and matrices, the sanctuary's capacity, among other things.
Cangandala National Park, located around 25 kilometres south of the municipal seat of Cangandala, currently has a population of 115 animals of the Giant Sable antelope species, including adults and cubs.
Around 200 sable antelope are registered in the Luando Integral Reserve, whose poaching and anarchic burning are the biggest concerns.
Rosário Pais heads a delegation of ambassadors who have been working in Malanje since Sunday as part of the Forum on youth participation in local governance and its impact on the development of human capital, which kicked off today under the auspices of the European Union.
