Cabinda - The ambassador of the United States of America in Angola (USA), Tulinabo Mushingi, launched this Tuesday, in Cabinda, the project for Development of Forest Nurseries of Native Plant Species.
The project expects to produce, in the first year, around four thousand seedlings for reforestation on an experimental basis, in an area of two hectares, and has financing from the USA valued at US$44k dollars, also involving the 11 de Novembro University and the Kuvata cooperative (Angola).
It will be attended by 500 people, including university students and teachers, environmentalists and representatives of various social organizations.
The main objective is to boost the reproduction of plant species that are victims of the devastation caused by the illegal felling of trees for the production of wood, charcoal and firewood.
The project also includes the collection and large-scale launch of seeds, pre-nursery and nursery for fruit production.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Tulinabo Mushingi said that the project constitutes the beginning of a legacy for the sustainable balance of the environment and that it will contribute to the generation of jobs and the improvement of the population's living conditions.
“We believe that the nursery will be the place to share good practices and experiences and develop solutions to environmental challenges in the country and on the African continent”, he stated, highlighting that his country intends to contribute to the reforestation of Angola.
On the occasion, the deputy-governor of Cabinda for the Economic Area, Macário Romão Lembe, who represented governor Mara Quiosa at the event, guaranteed the government's institutional support, having recommended other organizations to promote initiatives for environmental sustainability.
For his part, the rector of the 11 de Novembro University, Kianvu Tamu, praised the support of the American Government in this project, which he considered will contribute significantly to the increase of forest resources not only in the province of Cabinda but also in other parts of the country and of the African continent.
During his few hours' working visit, the American ambassador held a courtesy meeting with the provincial governor in Cabinda, visited the Chevron-Cabinda Gulf Oil Company Limited (CABGOC) camp and the Caio Deepwater Terminal.
