Baku – The Climate Observatory of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) was officially presented Saturday in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, as part of COP29, which runs until November 22.
The new platform gathers climate information from member countries, including data from Angola, which can be accessed via the Internet.
During the presentation, at the stands of Portugal and Angola, Cecília Silva Bernardo, national director of Climate Action and Sustainable Development, highlighted that the tool will be essential to guide public policies, projects and programs related to climate and sustainable development.
Cecília Silva said that a specific platform for adaptation and development issues is still being developed in Angola, while the CPLP addresses, among others, mitigation aspects.
In the initial phase of the project, he explained, Angola entered data mainly on Agriculture, Forestry and Demography. In future stages, information from the Oil and Energy sector will be added.
She said that the platform also includes data on deforested areas, reforested areas, dense forests, rivers and other indicators that will be updated with the new Census.
On greenhouse gas emissions, she stressed that African countries, including Angola, represent only about 3.5% of global emissions.
Since 2014, Angola has received just over US$100 million for climate projects, most of them in the form of donations.
Despite the demands imposed by funders, the country has worked to ensure that resources are effectively used for the benefit of the communities and sectors benefited.
Angola's participation in COP29 was considered satisfactory, with significant progress in meetings, booth activities and the establishment of partnerships for future investments.
The Government of Angola recognizes the country's vulnerability to climate change and is aware of the impacts it has been suffering and the tendency for them to worsen.
Floods, droughts, soil erosion and rising sea levels are pointed out as the main effects of climate change in the country. FMA/SC/DOJ
