Luanda- The Secretary of State for Climate Action and Sustainable Development, Nascimento Soares, said Friday in Luanda that the country needs robust systems to accurately measure greenhouse gas emissions and monitor the impact of policies implemented.
Speaking at the opening of the Consultative Workshop for the Development of the National Monitoring, Reporting and Verification System (MRV) for the Energy Sector, the official stressed that this would allow the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies to be accurately demonstrated, in which the energy sector plays a strategic role in Angola's development.
The official said the country's electrification is essential to boost economic growth, improve people's quality of life and strengthen international competitiveness.
He highlighted the government's commitment to climate transparency, environmental sustainability and building a more resilient future to strengthen its geopolitical position in the fight against climate change and create an environment conducive to attracting sustainable investment in the energy sector.
Nascimento Soares emphasized the need for Angola to have reliable data and effective mechanisms for monitoring and reporting emissions, as the development of the national MRV system will strengthen climate governance and ensure that mitigation actions in the electricity sector are effective and better aligned with climate goals.
The workshop, an initiative of the Ministry of Environment in partnership with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), covered topics such as "Design of the national MRV system and alignment with national and international emission reduction targets" and "Data and information flow, challenges and opportunities in collecting, processing and reporting emissions data in the electricity subsector".SJ/SEC/TED/AMP
