Luanda – An community observatory for migratory birds will be created this year by the Ministry of the Environment in the municipality of Mungo, Huambo Province, the head of the Department of Conservation Areas of the National Institute of Biodiversity and Conservation Areas (INBAC), Noé Pinto Quelengue, reported on Thursday in Luanda.
Speaking to ANGOP, after speaking on “Monitoring of migratory birds in Angola”, he stressed that the same area will be elevated to the category of local environmental conservation area in group five, in which the area can be classified for species and habitat management.
According to him, a program will be launched in March to reforest the area, as this is an urgent need for the successful creation of this observatory.
He stressed that the measure comes after the identification of the main places with the largest bird population, in which several studies have been carried out on the identification of birds and the protection of these locations.
The official reaffirmed that there are five large places in the country, three of which are considered marine areas of biological and ecological importance, one a natural reserve and another one an integral island of birds.
He explained that these areas present human life pressures related to hunting, exploitation of salt flats, dumping of domestic waste, capture of shellfish, itinerant agriculture and burning, which have in turn influenced the reduction of birdlife along the national coast.
Noé Pinto Quelengue pointed out that Angola records thousands of birds between January and March, coming from Europe due to the winter in this region, advising that this is the best time to go on birdwatching tourism.
He said he hopes that the conference will engage local communities and participants, as well as mobilize funds to implement actions related to bird conservation in Angola.
