Luanda - Angola is preparing its National Biodiversity Strategy 2025/2030, as one of the main legal tools to be presented during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to take place in October in Colombia.
The 16th edition of the world's most important Conference on Biodiversity, the COP of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), will be held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024.
according to the Minister of Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, who was speaking to the daily newspaper Jornal de Angola, the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan include a comprehensive approach, taking into account its importance.
Ana Carvalho said the document represents Angola's commitment to achieve the Vision of the Global Biodiversity Framework established within the scope of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
According to the minster, the development of the National Biodiversity Strategy 2025/2030 and the Action Plan represent a significant milestone in Angola's desire to achieve the vision of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (CBD), which is to protect 30 percent of the territory and restore degraded ecosystems.
During COP 16, experts from various sectors, directly and indirectly linked to the environment sector presented their contributions to the development of the new strategy with a view to improve the protection and conservation of biodiversity in Angola.
The United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (known as COP 16) will be held under the motto "Peace with Nature" with the aim of creating a reflection to improve the relationship with the environment and rethink an economic model that does not pollute nature.
The COP or Conference of the Parties is the most important space for discussion and negotiation of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), where countries debate issues related to the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
COP 16 is the first after the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which took place during COP 15 in December 2022.
The agreement serves as an action plan for the 196 signatory countries of the Convention, including Angola, to take measures at the national level to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. JAM/PA/DAN/AMP
