Moçâmedes – Angola’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Ministry of Environment and Namibe provincial government are to implement a reforestation plan for the mountain range Serra da Leba, with the planting of Robusta coffee.
The information was disclosed Wednesday by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, António de Assis, after an assessment of the consequences of the deforestation taking place at the mountain range Serra da Leba.
"We've already managed to identify the people who are going to work on preparing the seedlings. The very families who are here and who are currently destroying the forest for charcoal will be involved, as will the children and young people from the schools. We're going to establish a strong environmental education program," the minister said.
Namibe governor, Archer Mangueira, said the government is doing everything it can to find alternative livelihoods for the families who live and work in charcoal production in the tourist mountain range of Serra da Leba.
The governor said the plan to relocate the families living on the mountain will include the implementation of the Robusta Coffee Plantation Project, which will have the full support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.VR/FA/AC/TED/AMP
