Moçâmedes – A total of 6,932,732 units of eggs were produced, during the 1st three months of this year, in the south-western Province of Namibe, which represents an increase of more than 3000% compared to 2023.
According to the director of the Provincial Agriculture Office, Zonza Puissa, production in the first quarter of this year exceeded the 21,917 eggs produced in the same period last year.
Zonza Puissa attributed the increase to the implementation of the poultry promotion program, which allowed the distribution of chicks and chickens to more than a thousand families, as well as to the investments made in the two poultry farms in operation, out of the four existing ones.
Speaking to ANGOP, the official said that the province is about to become self-sufficient in the production of eggs and chickens, having advanced the acquisition and entry into operation of an incubator with the capacity to hatch 1,750 eggs from 21 in 21 days.
In other areas, the official said that, in the second quarter, 23 950 kg of cow meat, 14 431 kg of pork and 3 475 kg of goat and sheep were produced.
Compared to the same previous period, he said that there was a 36% drop, due to the vaccination campaign that forced breeders to keep animals at rest.
Regarding the agricultural sector, Zonza Puissa highlighted that 112, 334 tons of several products were harvested, with emphasis on tomatoes, which represent 61% of production.
He stated that the sum of agricultural production in the aforementioned period amounts to an increase of 28%, compared to the same period of the previous year, when 87k tons of various products were produced.
The cultivation of these products was carried out on an area of 18.3k hectares, with the involvement of more than 49 thousand peasant families.
He made it known that the municipality of Moçâmedes topped the production chart, followed by Tômbwa, Bibala, Camucuio and Virei.
