Cabinda - A cassava processing centre with the capacity to transform seven tonnes into cassava flour will start operating in the next few days in the commune of Malembo, Angolan northern Cabinda province.
In statements to the press, Monday, the agro-processing coordinator of the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) "Word Vision", Upele Lamber, said that the project, financed by this institution, is being implemented as part of the process of developing value chains, aiming to train citizens in the production and transformation of this product into flour, bread made from cassava flour mixed with wheat, among other derivatives.
The centre will create 23 jobs for local young people, mostly women, according to the source. In turn, peasants Filomena Pedrosa and Madalena Puati highlighted the importance of the factory unit for the community, as it will help farmers to process cassava on a large scale and will generate jobs for young people.
According to Filomena Pedrosa, projects of this kind encourage farmers to increase production levels and should therefore be comprehensive.
The commune of Malembo is located 30 kilometres from the city of Cabinda and has around eight thousand inhabitants, with fishing and agriculture being the predominant activities. JFC/JL/TED/DOJ
