Lóvua - The government of Lunda-Norte Province is committed to creating conditions to boost the agricultural sector, by attracting investors and incentives for local producers, in order to transform the province into one of the country's largest granaries.
This ambition was expressed on Friday, by the governor of Lunda-Norte, Filomena Miza, during the opening ceremony of the 2024/2025 agricultural campaign, in the municipality of Lóvua, emphasising that the government sees this area of activity as an opportunity to diversify the economy and create jobs for young people.
‘We must make the best use of the climatic conditions, arable soils and water resources that the province has available, to turn it into an agricultural granary, producing various basic products ranging from cereals, vegetables, fruit, roots and tubers,’ she emphasised.
According to the governor, the local government is also committed to creating conditions aimed at encouraging the production of coffee, cocoa, cashew nuts and palm oil, certainly not forgetting honey, meat and eggs, in order to improve the population's diet.
She alsdo said that, it is extremely important to transform cooperatives and associations into de facto production units, endowed with legal personality, assets and technical and financial status, allied to training people to become entrepreneurs, with the aim of contributing to food production and job creation.
She emphasised that the distribution of agricultural equipment and inputs, such as tractors, motor-cultivators and the granting of agricultural loans, which recently took place in Chitato, reinforces the Executive's commitment to developing the sector.
She instructed the municipal administrators to prioritise the promotion of family farming within the Integrated Local Development and Anti-Poverty Programme, supporting producers with inputs.
In the current agricultural season, 318,691 hectares of arable land are available in Lunda-Norte province, compared to 272,765 in the 2023/24 season.
The campaign, which expects a harvest of 2 million 515 thousand 868.6 tonnes of various products, will involve 728 cooperatives, 416 associations, 98 small producers, in a universe of 211 thousand 134 families.
In the 2023/24 agricultural season, 224,343 families were involved, producing 2 million, 462,45 tonnes of various products, exceeding the target of 2 million, 200,384 tonnes. HD/DAN/jmc
