Ondjiva – The national director of Cáritas de Angola, Rosa da Costa, on Saturday, in the city of Ondjiva, defended the need to strengthen support for community agriculture for its sustainability in the province of Cunene, aiming to reduce hunger within families.
Speaking to ANGOP, on the sidelines of the three-day working visit to Cunene, the official said that the necessary support is related to the means of production for the sustainability of the community garden, in the Cafu canal, municipality of Ombadja.
She said that during the field visit it was possible to learn about the work being developed by the institution in that province, in a four-hectare vegetable garden, where tomatoes and corn are being produced, involving 150 families.
“As we are new to the Board of Directors of Cáritas de Angola, we are observing ongoing projects in the provinces, in order to understand the reality to help within our possibilities”, she stated.
She informed that another challenge to be embraced is the training of provincial and technical directors, most of whom are new to the positions, in various subjects for better project management.
On the other hand, Rosa da Costa expressed satisfaction with the families' involvement in the project, as well as the way in which the local government is supporting the change in reality in relation to the fight against hunger and poverty.
In turn, the director of Cáritas Diocesana in Cunene, Pascoal Vataleni, highlighted that at the beginning of the year they received motor pumps, hoses and fuel from the national directorate, which is allowing the production of tomatoes and corn.
He said that a project is underway to build two 60,000-liter water tanks to support agriculture in Cafu canal, as well as the equipping of a community kitchen in Ondjiva, to serve the neediest families.
Caritas aims to promote human solidarity actions, especially in relation to the poor, children, young people, the elderly and other sections of the community. PEM/LHE/QCB/MRA/DOJ
