Ondjiva - More than 10,000 tons of assorted kind of vegetables were produced in two years in the irrigated perimeter of the Cafu canal, Cunene province.
Of the five thousand hectares available, only 136.28 are being explored, and in 2023 the production was 4,000 tons, while in the 2024 campaign there was a harvest of 6,799 kilograms.
The information was provided to ANGOP on Friday by the director of the Cunene Economic Development Office, Felisberto Hisimungula, noting that from a production point of view along the canal there is a reasonable growth.
'In the two years, we had a gross production of more than 10,000 tons, with emphasis on tomatoes, which represent 60 percent of production and preferably destinations from the urban centers of Cunene, to the provinces of Luanda and Huila.
He said that along with tomatoes, onions are 20 percent, cabbage and corn five percent, eggplant four, while cabbage, cabbage and beans are two percent each.
Felisberto Hisimungula pointed out the need for more support and financing for producers, in order to leverage and improve the levels of cultivation in the Cafu perimeter.
He informed that in 2023 four producers were supported, three of which from the FADA material technical assistance credit line, with 10 million kwanzas and two individual producers with seven million each.
In 2024, as part of the launch of the second phase of credits in mechanized means under FADA, 17 producers benefited, six with tractors and 11 with motor tillers and a value of five million kwanzas for working capital.
Structure of the Cafu Canal
Inaugurated in 2022 by the President of the Republic, the Cafu canal is the first of five structuring projects to combat drought in the south of the country.
With a budget of 44 billion, 358 million and 360 thousand 651 kwanzas, the project benefits access to water for 235 thousand people in the municipalities of Ombadja, Cuanhama and Namacunde, watering of 250,000 animals and the irrigation of 5,000 hectares of agricultural fields.
The project has an open-air canal, with a length of about 165 km, the main one being 47 km, from the Cafu station to Ombala yo Mungo, and two others that connect the region of Ndombondola and Namacunde.FI/LHE/ASS/DOJ
