Caála – At least 386,526 tons of various agricultural products were harvested in the 2023/2024 agricultural season, by the family sector in the municipality of Caála, central Huambo Province, representing 86,173 more compared to the previous harvest.
Speaking to ANGOP Thursday, the local director of Agriculture, Avelino Calupeteca, said that there were 22,466 tons of corn, 7,476 tons of beans, 151,520 tons of reindeer potatoes and 49,0 36 tons of sweet potatoes.
The harvest also included 60,623 tons of various vegetables, 2,032 tons of rice, 320 tons of wheat, 331 tons of soybeans, among others in the development phase such as pumpkins, sugar cane, peanuts, cassava, sorghum and millet.
He said that, in order to achieve these results, the majority of peasant families, grouped in cooperatives, benefited, in addition to technical assistance from the Agrarian Development Station (EDA), from contributions and other agricultural resources.
He mentioned that they distributed, in the 2023/2024 agricultural season, more than 363 tons of fertilizers, with emphasis on 12/24/12 fertilizer and ammonium sulfate.
Avelino Calupeteca reported that peasant families also received various quantities of seed varieties delivered, like fertilizers, by the Agrarian Development Support Fund (FADA) within the framework of the subsidy program of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, while at the local area is included in anti-poverty policies.
The official praised the commitment of farming families who, despite various challenges and difficulties, increased production levels, a gain that is intended to be increased in the next agricultural season.
Therefore, he reaffirmed the commitment of the Administration of the municipality of Caála to continue supporting the production of rice, wheat, soybeans and other less traditional crops in the district, with a focus on the diversification of agricultural cultivation and, at the same time, on strengthening food security.
Currently, he recalled, the municipality of Caála controls 75,000 peasant families, six thousand of which are associated in 155
countries.
Known in the past as “Angola’s Granary”, the municipality of Caála, located in the western corridors of the province of Huambo, has an estimated population of 392,000 inhabitants.
