Menongue - The National Mine Action Agency (ANAM) in Cuando Cubango handed over 106 fields of arable land in Menongue on Thursday, completely free of mines, to encourage agricultural production.
The action was led by the head of ANAM's regional department, Marcial Cativa, at the opening of the 2024/2025 agricultural campaign in Menongue, t Cuando Cubango.
At this stage, another 73 fields have yet to be cleared.
Marcial Cativa said that the land handed over would boost agriculture and entrepreneurship, with a focus on fighting poverty, underlining that the areas have been cleared from January to August this year, resulting in the destruction of anti-tank mines, anti-personnel mines, mortar explosives and ammunition of different calibers, among other devices.
The ANAM representative said that in Menongue municipality there are still 28 areas to be cleared, including the Missombo commune, with 13 areas, Jamba Cueio (nine) and the Caiundo commune (23), without ruling out the existence of other suspect areas.
ANAM was created under Presidential Decree 172/21, of July 7, as a national body that regulates, accompanies, monitors and supervises all those involved in the demining sector. LMZ/FF/ALH/TED/AMP
