Uíge – The National Director for Water, Elsa Ramos, informed Thursday that a total of 15,000 new household connections will be made, over a two-year period, in the city of Uíge, to reinforce the drinking water supply system in this region.
With the materialization of these new connections, whose preparatory works have already begun, the city of Uíge will have a total of 48,400 home connections.
The official made this statement at the workshop on the presentation of the Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan for the province of Uíge, having mentioned that, in addition to the reinforcement of 15,000 connections, a project of 10,000 connections financed by the World Bank is underway.
She added that there are other projects, financed by the African Development Bank and the European Investment Bank.
Regarding the presentation of the Uíge's Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan, she said that it aims to collect contributions for its preparation, scheduled for October this year.
The project, which will cover seven provinces of the country (Uíge, Huambo, Huíla, Malange, Moxico, Bié and Cuanza-Norte), aims to guarantee the continuity and quality of water supply, efficiency in production and collection, assist water companies and sanitation in consolidating its organizational structure, as well as in managing business planning, strengthening the institutional framework of the water and sanitation sector, among others.
On the other hand, Elsa Ramos considered the water supply and sanitation master plan an important tool, justifying that it will promote future investments in Uíge and other provinces, in terms of water supply and basic sanitation.
She said that an evaluation of the system, its functioning and how it can be improved is currently underway to project new investments and projects, to reinforce the current supply system.
On the other hand, the official said that, by 2027, around 70% of the country's population will benefit from water, with currently 58% already benefiting from it.
In turn, the vice-governor for Technical Services and Infrastructure, Helena da Cruz Dias Pereira, considered the plan important for the process of expansion and improvement of technical networks that will allow for greater quality of public service supply in the sector.
She explained that the Angolan Government, through the Ministry of Energy and Water, has been developing several actions that are based on the construction of infrastructure, aiming to expand the water distribution network in the country.
