New York- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) unveiled Friday to the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations , Francisco José da Cruz, its 2024-2028 action programme for the country’s national programme, which focuses on meeting the needs of women, young people and the most vulnerable.

Presented by the Regional Director for Africa, Ahunna Eziakonwa, the programme aims to contribute to four results of the United Nations Sustainable Cooperation (UNSCDF), enabling beneficiaries to use and have equitable access to quality social and productive services provided by effective institutions, participate in and benefit from more effective and inclusive democratic governance based on human rights, strengthening prevention capacities and promoting peace and security in the region.

The programme also aims to encourage participation for a more inclusive, diversified and sustainable economic growth, as well as benefiting from sustainable management of the environment and natural resources and resilience to disasters and climate change.

The main objective of the Angola Programme is to impact on the reduction of multidimensional poverty and inequality through improved health and well-being, sustainable, inclusive and resilient economic diversification and natural resource management, enhanced resilience to climate change and disasters and stronger democratic governance, leading to transformative change through a portfolio approach that leverages systems thinking centred on youth, women and vulnerable populations.

The two officials exchanged views and perspectives on the document, which will be submitted for approval on August 31, 2023.

The country’s programme is firmly anchored in the priorities of the National Development Programme and aligned with the UNDP Strategic Plan 2022-2025, the UNDP Gender Equality Strategy 2022-2025 and the UNDP Strategic Offer 2022-2025 and the UNDP's Renewed Strategic Offer for Africa.

Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, digitalisation and innovation are among the cross-cutting priorities in these programmes, whose vision is empowerment, people's resilience and equitable, inclusive and sustainable socio-economic structural transformation of the country.

UNDP was established in 1965 by the United Nations General Assembly. It is the UN's development network and one of the world's largest intergovernmental development agencies.

The organisation helps countries achieve poverty eradication and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion, supporting development policies, leadership skills, partnership skills, institutional capacities and building resilience to sustain development results.
