Huambo - The moderator of the Council of Christian Churches in Angola (CICA) in the Province of Huambo, Pastor Euclides dos Santos, on Sunday called for the retrieval of social action in families, especially in the poorest sections of society.

He was speaking at the opening of the ecumenical service of the traditional Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which took place in the Parish of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, in the city of Huambo, an initiative of CICA, under the theme "You shall love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself", which is scheduled to end next Sunday (28).

At the time, the Pastor said that it was important for families to practice love of others through general social actions by assisting people in need in the neighbourhoods and rural communities, given that it is the main commandment of God's law.

He said that the gesture of solidarity with vulnerable people shows that love has no barriers and goes beyond blood ties, and that the Church is called to play an unconditional role in society.

To him, there will only be true unity and peace in rural and urban communities if families truly show love for their neighbours, and he urged citizens to renounce personal pride and work harder for the benefit of all, focusing on ethical, moral, cultural and social values.

The pastor said that the Week of Prayer aims to strengthen Christian unity in Angola and in the world, since the faithful are committed to promoting fraternal love in which everyone is called to practise mercy.

Father Vicente Sanombo, representing the Archbishop of Huambo, Dom Zeferino Zeca Martins, said that the message of christians will only be credible if they are united in love, without regard for colour, race or social class.

According to the priest, the great challenge for the churches, as partners of the state, is currently to restrieve ethical, moral and civic values in society, with the necessary commitment to unity, prosperity and the consolidation of love.

CICA in Huambo province has 16 affiliated churches.
