Lisbon - Angolan doctor and professor Filomeno Fortes was re-elected, on Monday, in the Portuguese capital, director of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the New University of Lisbon (IHMT), for a new four-year term, following an international competition.
The competition had three phases, curricular applications and a proposal for an action plan for the next 4 years, a public
presentation and an interview carried out by 15 members of the Institute's Council.
Speaking to ANGOP, after his re-election, which he has held since 2019, Filomeno Fortes said for the next four years
It has been proposed to reinforce the internationalization and cooperation of the Institute at the level of the World Health Organization and the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) Europe and Africa.
The assumptions behind this claim, Fortes said, are related to warning signs of health emergencies, such as climate change, migration, epidemics, manipulation of pathogenic agents, resistance to antibiotics and setbacks in health coverage in relation to the control of neglected tropical diseases.
IHMT operates in the fields of training, research and provision of services to the community.
In Angola, the institution has partnership protocols with the Universities Agostinho Neto, Katyavala Buila, the Private University
of Angola (UPRA) and the Hospital Agostinho Neto in Huíla.
Filomeno Fortes has a master's degree in public health, a doctorate in biomedical sciences and a specialist in malaria.
Throughout his career he held in Angola, among other positions, that of National Director of Endemic Disease Control, Head of the National Department of Disease Control and Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the Agostinho Neto University.
Founded in 1902, the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is dedicated to teaching and research in public health, tropical medicine, biomedical sciences and epidemiology, with a special focus on links with Portuguese-speaking countries.
