Luanda - The ambassador of Japan in Angola, Jiro Maruhashi, this Thursday praised the measures adopted by the Angolan Government to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
The Japanese diplomat was speaking to the press, after an audience with the speaker of the National Assembly, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
"We spoke about the situation of Covid-19," said the Asian nation diplomat, before adding that "in fact, until now, the Angolan government has taken adequate measures to contain infection (...)".
The diplomat thanked the participation of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, by videoconference, in the Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI) Summit, held in June this year, from Tokyo, Japan.
GAVI raised millions of dollars in contributions to the Covid-19 vaccine sharing mechanism.
The summit was hosted by GAVI, led by former Portuguese Prime Minister, Durão Barroso, and Japanese Prime Minister, Yoshihide Suga. The contributions will make it possible to vaccinate at least 1.8 billion people in vulnerable countries.
Parliamentary exchange
The diplomat said that, in his country, a Japan-Angola parliamentary friendship group had been set up, noting that as part of that initiative, before the Covid-19 pandemic, several Japanese senators were visiting Angola.
"When the pandemic situation improves we will increase this exchange," the diplomat said, also requesting, from the Angolan side, the creation of a parliamentary friendship group of this kind.
