Luanda - Guinea-Bissau Wednesday welcomed Angola's efforts to achieve peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which resulted in the July 30 announcement in Luanda of the ceasefire agreement between that country and Rwanda.
This was expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities of Guinea-Bissau, Carlos Pinto Pereira, during an audience he granted to the Angolan ambassador to that country, Mário Augusto.
According to a note sent to ANGOP, the Guinean minister highlighted the mediation of Angolan President João Lourenço, who was honored in May 2022, in Malabo, by the African Union as Champion of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.
During the meeting, Carlos Pinto Pereira welcomed the establishment of the ceasefire in the east of the DRC that entered into force on August 4, 2024, with the aim of achieving peace and security in that region.
According to Ambassador Mário Augusto, this agreement was the result of Angola's ongoing efforts to seek peace, security and stability in Africa, particularly in the Great Lakes region".
The two diplomats praised President João Lourenço, for his efforts under the Luanda Process and the United Nations' continued commitment to support efforts to restore peace, security and stability in the DRC.
The Guinean Minister was informed by the Angolan diplomat about the preparations for the 4th edition of the Luanda Biennial, the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace in Africa, a joint initiative of Angola, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the African Union (AU).
The event will take place in October 2025, under the theme "Promoting Education, Innovation and Sustainable Development for the Africa We Want".
Since 2019, the event has been held every two years in Luanda, with the aim of promoting a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
The 3rd edition of the Luanda Biennale was held in November 2023, under the motto "Education, Culture of Peace and African Citizenship as Tools for the Sustainable Development of the Continent".
Ambassador Mário Augusto was told about Guinea-Bissau's interest in seeing Angola participate at the highest level in the celebrations of the Centenary of Amílcar Cabral, national hero of the liberation struggle in Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, on November 16, the Day of the Armed Forces of Guinea-Bissau, with political, academic and cultural events and demonstrations.
The celebrations of the Centenary of Amílcar Cabral aim to highlight, with due solemnity, the life and work of this outstanding figure in contemporary African history. ART/AMP
