Luena – Angolan Executive has approved an emergency intervention programme to contain the ravines that threaten to destroy the abstraction system that supplies water to more than 200,000 people in Luena, eastern Moxico province.
This was confirmed by the ruling MPLA party's first provincial secretary, Gonçalves Muandumba, during a political event held in the Canhengue district, on the outskirts of Luena on Saturday.
Speaking to the press, Muandumba said apart from the largest water abstraction system, the ravines, which are in the process of progression, also threaten to destroy dozens of residences in 11 de Novembro and Caminina neighbourhoods.
According to the MPLA's first provincial secretary, a survey has already been carried out in that area, whose containment plan has already been approved by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço.
“There is an emergency programme in place, for its containment, at the moment resources are being mobilised for its intervention”, said the also provincial governor.
The floods that have intensified in recent days are opening up ravines in several areas of Luena city, also threatening to destroy a drainage ditch, built under the programme to combat the ravine and worth 3.5 billion kwanzas.
ANGOP has learned that the aforementioned ditch may soon receive restoration works, to be carried out by Afavias, the company that built the project.
