Luanda – Angolan Foreign Affairs minister Téte António stressed Tuesday the central role of diplomacy in the prevention and resolution to the conflicts, as well as Angola’s commitment to the initiatives that promote peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Delivering his speech at the 2nd Ministerial Meeting of African Union – European Union, the official stressed the country’s mediation role in normalisation of relationships between Ruanda and Uganda.
He also highlighted the country’s commitment to search for a fair and sustainable solution that ensure peace and security in Central African Republic (CAR).
Téte António recalled that the Angolan president João Lourenço, in his capacity as president of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), welcomed the unilateral cease fire decreed in CAR on 15 October and reiterated that this political decision was crucial for the success of all peace and national reconciliation process in that country”.
The minister said that Angola defends an end to the arms embargo imposed on the government of the Central African Republic (CAR) by the United Nations Security Council.
The official also reiterated the country’s effort for peace in the continent which became evident when the country hosted the 2nd Edition of the Pan-African Forum for Culture of Peace in African, Luanda Biennial on 27 - 29 November this year.
The event was held in partnership with African Union and the UNESCO.
“We expect the commitment and active participation of all States so that together we continue making progress toward dissemination and domestication of Culture of Peace in Africa”, the minister pointed out.
The minister mentioned the fight against the international terrorism, maritime piracy and the violent extremism in Africa as a common responsibility and one of the priorities of cooperation between African Union and European Union.
“In order to boost the conditions for fighting against terrorism in Africa as well as promoting the implementation of AU-EU cooperation, Angola proposed to the African Union Commission the holding of a Summit of Heads of State and Government on Terrorism in Africa, for February 2022”, Téte António announced.
