Luanda – The Head of State, João Lourenço, said Tuesday that the Angolan government will always be committed to exploring the framework of bilateral cooperation with Cuba.
In a note addressed to the President of Cuba, Miguel Mário Diaz Canel Bermudez, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks, Lourenço said that the intent is to raise the relationship bonds to rates that correspond to the real potential “that we have, with reciprocal advantages that satisfy the yearnings of our two peoples”.
He highlighted the Cuban people's courage, bravery, determination and tradition of resistance, who have made enormous sacrifices for justice, freedom and sovereignty for their country and other peoples of the world.
While wishing prosperity to Cuba, the Head of State recognises that the Cuban people have left a moral legacy and a revolutionary conscience that continues to inspire new generations of leadership.
On 26 July 1953, the young lawyer Fidel Castro, with 165 men, including his brother Raul Castro, carried out an assault on the Moncada headquarters in Santiago de Cuba and the Cespedes barracks in an attempt to arm the population and overthrow the government of Fulgencio Baptista.
In another statement, Lourenço expressed his conviction to continue to work for the development of friendship and cooperation ties between Angola and Liberia.
“I want, on this occasion, to praise the tenacity and the values of the Liberian people, which have moved them throughout their recent history to perpetuate their sovereignty, becoming an example for the entire African continent”, reads the letter to the President of Liberia, George Manneh Oppong Weah.
The message is intended to congratulate the Liberian people on the 175th anniversary of their country's independence, proclaimed on 26 July 1847. Liberia was the first African country to become independent.
