Luanda - Angola will continue to work on strengthening and deepening of the political and diplomatic ties as well as economic cooperation with the United States, the President of Republic João Lourenço has said.
The Statesman expressed this in a message ahead of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Angola and US celebrated on Friday (19).
João Lourenço defended the deepening of relations with the US based on respect, reciprocity and mutual advantages for the benefit of both countries and peoples, states a press note reached ANGOP.
“At this juncture, On my behalf and of the Angolan Executive, I express our appreciation for the growing ties that bind our two countries”. stressed the president.
João Lourenço highlighted the inspiring words of his US counterpart, Joe Biden, who expressed the views that the two countries fully share.
He emphasised that the three decades of partnership have proven to be increasingly important and transformative for the respective countries and peoples.
The Angolan Head of State considered the shared values irreversible and the commitment to prosperity, safety, innovation, justice and friendship.
The Angolan president stressed the announcements made by his counterpart Joe Biden in the recent G7 summit held in Hiroshima in Japan as another evidence of the increasing partnership between both countries.
In his message, the Head of State stated that the significant investments in Angola, announced by the US are based on understandings reached between the countries and on the growing partnership also in the area of Defence and Security.
João Lourenço thanked the US President Joe Biden, the Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. Congress and Senate and the American people, for the constructive position and spirit of collaboration that now defines the relationship between our two countries.
Angola and US relations
Angola and the United States of America officially established diplomatic relations in 1993.
Economic relations between the two countries are based on the energy sector.
The American Exim-Bank has a credit line to support the US exports to Angola.
The US and Angola Chamber of Commerce is focused on promoting trade and investment between both states.
Fight against Corruption
The United States supports Angola in its fight against corruption through a number of initiatives, including the Treasury Department's programme, launched in March 2019.
The objective is to build the country's capacity to implement the anti-money laundering and terrorist financing.
Economic Cooperation
American companies have investments in Angola, especially in the energy sector. ExxonMobil, Halliburton, Baker Hughes, Caterpillar, Chevron, Cummins, TechnipFMC and Tidewater are all the companies represented in the country.
In 2019, a consortium led by Chevron announced plans to invest more than USD 2 billion in exploring new offshore natural gas fields and increasing production from existing fields.
The US Ex-ImBank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Angola in April 2019 to explore guarantees of up to 4 billion dollars in support of US exports to the country.
