Addis Ababa – Angola deposited Tuesday in the African Union (AU) the instruments for the ratification of the protocols of the African Charter on Human and People´s Rights related to Older Persons and People with Disabilities in Africa.
According to a press release from the Embassy of Angola in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the instruments signed by the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, on 12 April this year, were handed over by the Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union (AU), Francisco José da Cruz.
For the ambassador, the ratification of these legal instruments linked to human rights reflects the expression of the commitment of the Angolan Head of State to creating legal and material conditions to ensure the full affirmation of citizenship by all Angolans and the adoption of measures that guarantee the elimination of any kind of discrimination and asymmetries.
The protocols related to the Rights of Older Persons in Africa adopted by AU in January 2016 determines the prohibition of all kinds of discrimination against old age and encourages the elimination of social and cultural stereotypes that marginalize elderly people.
The document sets that it is the responsibility of the member-states to make the policies and legislation to ensure that the elderly get retirement from the employment and receive adequate pensions, as well as other social security procedures.
The protocol related to the rights of people with Disabilities in Africa adopted by the African Union in January 2018, aims to promote, protect and ensure that all people with disabilities fully and equally enjoy from all human rights, ensuring the respect for their dignity.
The protocol establishes that the member-states should apply all appropriate and efficient measures, including policy-making, legislative measures, administrative, institutional and budgetary provisions to guarantee and respect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
