Luanda - Angola is to host the 55th Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from July1 to 7.
The event will take place under the motto “The role of parliaments in promoting renewable energy policies in the SADC region and creating a single Regional Energy Market".
The SADC region has faced an electricity crisis in recent years due to population growth and the considerable increase in industrial infrastructure in the region.
According to a press release, the parliamentarians from the 15 SADC member countries will analyze strategies and actions in the various fields, in accordance with their constitutional mandates in the legislative field, monitoring and control, resource allocation, education of the population; the benefits and advantages of renewable energies, both for the environment and the economy.
The parliamentarians will seek to promote and facilitate regional cooperation and integration using new technologies, creating a favorable environment to attract both local and international investment.
According to the vision of the member countries, the creation of the Single Energy Market could accelerate economic well-being and the eradication of poverty in Southern Africa, through cooperation and the harmonization of regional policies and strategies.
The FP-SADC is a body made up of members of the national parliaments of the member states.
Created by the SADC Summit in September 1997, the Forum is composed of the Chairperson of the Session and a maximum of five representatives elected by the National Parliament of each Member State.
The aim of the forum is to provide a platform to support and improve regional integration through parliamentary participation and to promote best practice in the role of parliaments in regional integration and cooperation. FMA/VIC/TED/AMP
