Berlin - Germany has criticized Russia and China for preventing essential goods from entering Syria, a country in civil war since 2011.
During a video conference of the UN Security Council, the German ambassador to the UN, Christoph Heusgen, said the two countries with a permanent seat on the Security Council should reverse the decision to block the entry points to the Middle East country, made in July.
"Instead of always complaining about the sanctions [imposed on Syria], Russia and China should reverse their decision and allow more points of entry to be opened, so that the population can actually get the food and medicine they need ", he stressed.
Addressing a Security Council, the ambassador also said that the UN body "disappointed the Syrian people", having criticized the support of the Russia to President Bashar al-Assad.
"Russia not only supported Assad, it also contributed to the suffering and death of people," he said.
In turn, the Deputy Ambassador of Russia, Dmitri Polyanskiy, accused the Germany and the West of disappointing the Syrian people with what he called as "hypocritical behaviour.
The Chinese representative, Yao Shaojun, argued that the blockade of humanitarian projects for the Syrian population was due to sanctions by the European Union and the United States and added that the German performance in the Security Council was less than expected.
The civil war in Syria has so far caused about 387,000 deaths, according to the balance sheet released by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) last week.
The UN has already estimated that the conflict has caused 6.7 million displaced people and 5.5 million refugees.
