New York - Angola has been participating since Friday, 16, in the Summit on the Transformation of Education, underway at the United Nations headquarters in New York, a joint initiative of the UN Secretary-General and the Director-General of UNESCO.
The event provides a unique opportunity to elevate education to the top of the global political agenda and to mobilize action, ambition, solidarity and solutions to recover pandemic-related learning losses and sow the seeds to transform education in a rapidly changing world.
The summit is also intended to lead the Member States to rethink and reinvent the concepts and theories about the present and future education systems at the international level, as part of the efforts to implement the goals and objectives number 4 of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development - to achieve a quality education at the National level by 2030.
The event, which takes place in the context of a growing crisis in education around the world, will follow up on the Secretary-General's report entitled "Our Common Agenda", seeking to generate greater political commitment to education as a public good.
The programme includes three moments: Mobilisation, an event led and organised by young people to convey collective recommendations on the transformation of education to decision-makers and policymakers.
The meeting, which includes the participation of the UN Assistant Secretary General, Amina Mohamed, and the President of the 77th session of the General Assembly, Csaba Kőrösi, was marked by intergenerational dialogue panels on how to overcome the challenges that the actors in the teaching learning face in different parts of the globe.
Saturday (17), designated as the Day of Solutions, will provide a platform for partners to mobilise support to launch or scale up initiatives related to the Summit's Thematic Action Tracks.
The summit's highest point will be Leaders' Day, on Monday, 19th, reserved for the presentation of National Declarations of Commitment by Heads of State and Government, holding of Round Tables and thematic sessions focusing on cross-cutting priorities with a view to education transformation.
On Leaders' Day, a Youth Declaration and the UN Secretary-General's Vision for Transforming Education will also be presented.
The transformation of Education should focus on five thematic areas, namely: inclusive schools, safe and healthy environment, professional training of teachers, acquisition of knowledge for life, work and sustainable development, digital teaching and the transformations and financing of Education.
The delegation is led by the Permanent Representative of the Mission of the Republic of Angola to the UN in New York, Maria de Jesus Ferreira.
It is integrated by the Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Angola to the UNESCO Offices in Paris Ana Maria de Oliveira, Ambassador João Gimolieca, staff from the Ministries of Education and Higher Education and representatives of the National Commission of Angola for UNESCO.
The Summit on Education Transformation is one of the high-level meetings convened by Secretary-General António Guterres, on the sidelines of the General Debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, to be held from 20 to 26 September.
