Moçâmedes - Authorities in the south-western province of Namibe have "set off the alarm" to prevent the entry of pigs from the province of Huila, where cases of African swine fever have been confirmed, the director of the Provincial Agriculture Office, Zonza Puissa, said today.

Speaking to ANGOP, the official informed that to guarantee animal health, in addition to blocking the entry of pigs, awareness campaigns are being carried out in national languages, in markets and slaughterhouses, to avoid contamination of their pig herds.

He said that more than 20 agricultural surveillance inspectors work in the province's 5 municipalities, as a way of preventing the sale and consumption of pig derivatives from Huíla.

“The disease only affects pigs. It is a contagious viral disease that has no cure or treatment, and can decimate livestock,” he said.

The director stated that the province vaccinated a total of 80 thousand cattle last year, which is guaranteeing the health of the animal reproduction in the region.
