Luanda - Angola started on Wednesday implementing a new system for plates’ registration, with the aim of strengthening road safety in the country, the National Police (PN) said.

The new standardized number plate contains security features defined by law, such as the QR code, security tape, serial number, among other data, which will allow vehicles and their owners to be easily identified.

The new license plate model also includes the national flag, the month and year in which the respective license plate was issued and aims to improve road traffic in the country.

The National Police clarified that vehicles with current license plates will continue to have the same numbers, but will have two years to replace the old plates with new ones, a process that will be done in phases and by series.

Drivers who already have their vehicles registered will have two years to replace only the number plate, without changing the number.

According to PN spokesman, Deputy Commissioner Mateus Rodrigues, the vehicles to be registered will receive a new registration number (alphanumeric).

The release of the new registration model marks a "historic step in the regularization of registration plates in Angola, the PN spokesperson said, adding that there are currently roughly 80 companies in the country to make license plates.QCB/IZ/DAN/AMP
