Geneva - Angola was elected Wednesday in Geneva as vice president of the Trade and Development Council (TDC), during the 70th ordinary session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), for a one-year mandate (2023-2024).

The meeting, which took place from 19 to 28 of this month at the Palais des Nations conference centre in Geneva, elected ten new vice presidents, namely two Africans, two Latin Americans, five Europeans and one Asian.

According to a note from Angola's ambassador to the United Nations (UN), ANGOP learnt that during the event, by unanimity, Pakistan's ambassador, Khalil Hashmi, was elected president of the Council.

The Trade and Development Council, is a body with the aim to monitor the UNCTAD activities and it gathers three times a year in executive sessions and once a year in regular session and for as long as the mandate remains in force (2023-2024).

Angola's Permanent Mission to the UN and in other international organisations, in Geneva, will represent the country on that body, as vice-president, together with Kenya.

UNCTAD helps developing countries access more equitably and effectively the benefits of a globalized economy. It produces economic and trade analyses, facilitates consensus building and provides technical assistance to help developing countries use trade, investment, finance and technology for inclusive and sustainable development.

During the event, developing countries joined the call to achieve CO2 net zero emissions by 2050, considered necessary to meet the Paris Agreement target of keeping global warming at no more than 1.5°C, aligned with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities.
