Luanda - The administrator of the General Tax Administration (AGT), Nereth Tati, said Wednesday in Luanda that the increase in customs duties for the import of some widely consumed products is aimed at encouraging national promotion.

Speaking at a press conference about some of the changes to the new Customs Tariff - version 2022, which has been in force since April, the AGT official said rice, which was previously exempt from charges, now has an import tax of 20 percent and sugar has gone from a tax of 10 percent to 30 percent, while milk went from 30 to 40 per cent tax.

Nereth Tati emphasized that the increase in taxes will stimulate the national economy and  promote the consumption of domestic goods.

"Without these policies, we won't have industries capable of competing with others and we will never have a country that is self-sufficient in some products, especially those in the basic food basket," Tati said.

For travelers, the administrator explained that goods or valuables worth no more than one million kwanzas, two liters of wine, 50 cigars, 200 cigarettes, one spirit drink and 100 milliliters of perfumes and cologne, among others, will be taxed.

In addition to the increase in these products, the new Tariff reduces the price of all products related to agricultural inputs, industrial equipment, roads and cars, in order to make it easier for national production to continue to grow.

It also introduces relief from import duties on soft drinks, from 60 to 50 percent, footwear, from 30 to 20 per cent, mobile phones (10 to 2 percent), among others.

The Customs Tariff version 2022 includes a 37 percent exemption from import duties, representing a balance at Southern African Development Community (SADC) level.

The document has a total of 5,953 tariff lines, bringing changes to international trade in the harmonized system version 2022 and at national level.LIN/AC/DAN/AMP
